Home Repair - Habitat for Humanity Choptank

Habitat Choptank supports homeowners in the neighborhoods we serve by completing critical health and safety repairs for qualifying families. In keeping with the Habitat principles of payback, sweat equity, and education, our Helping Hands Repair Program empowers homeowners to remain at home for as long as they choose. Eligible families make 80% or less of the area median income, own their own home, and have resided in the home as their primary residence for more than one year. Cost of the repair is calculated on an income-based sliding scale and repaid at 0% interest, making home repair affordable.

how to qualify for a habitat home repair

residency

Applicant must own and occupy a home located in the City of Cambridge, the Town of Easton, the Town of Hurlock, the Town of St. Michaels, and the Town of Trappe. Additionally, homeowner should be current on mortgage payment, homeowner insurance and property tax payments. Applicant must have lived in the home for a minimum of six months.

housing need

Eligible home must have health or safety related repair need.

qualifying income

Applicants must meet income guidelines, which means having total household income between 30%-80% of the HUD Area Median Income based on the county of residence and income size. (Homeowners 65 and older or whose income is solely from SSI do not have a minimum income requirement.)

affordability

Repayment requirements are established on an income-based sliding scale. Program application include a credit check to determine affordability and ability to pay.

screenings

Applicant will be screened through the National Sex Offender Registry and complete a criminal background check.

what does partnership look like for the homeowner family?

One of the most vital elements of the Habitat mission is the partnership between homeowners and Habitat for Humanity Choptank. As a partner with Habitat you actively participate in the Home Repair Program through sweat equity, homeowner information workshops, and financial responsibility.

“Sweat equity” refers to the actual hands-on involvement of partner families. Families have an opportunity through sweat equity to invest physically and emotionally in their home repair as well as the mission of Habitat.

Habitat Choptank offers educational opportunities for homeowners, including hands on workshops, preventative maintenance, and tips for staying in your home as you age. Workshops vary to meet the needs of the homeowner.
