In a letter to Habitat Choptank, homeowner Doretha writes, “You came into my life when I was in a very vulnerable state… I really did not know what to do, then my next door neighbor told me about Habitat.”

After her husband passed away, Doretha needed significant repairs to her home, including the floor and the kitchen, and a contractor did not complete the work needed for her to safely occupy the home. When Doretha first reached out to us, she wasn’t sure if we could help her. Doretha was met with kindness, compassion, and understanding right away as staff comforted her and helped her to navigate the repairs that would enable her to safely remain in her home. Habitat volunteers installed the floors and kitchen cabinets to create a working kitchen, and built the stairs, landings, and ramp to make the home accessible.

Doretha appreciated the kindness and respect shown to her by everyone involved with Habitat, from the staff to the volunteers. She was also grateful for the ways in which they made her home accessible, especially for the ramp that volunteers installed leading to her door.

“Habitat does more than just build houses,” writes Doretha, “they actually help people with problems and give them a chance for a better life.”
